Appointment of Dr. Camilia Martin

The Department of Pediatrics is pleased to announce the appointment of Camilia R. Martin, MD, MS, Endowed Professor and Division Chief of Neonatology, as Vice Chair of Research in the Department of Pediatrics at Weill Cornell Medicine, effective July 1, 2024.

Dr. Martin has served as the Division Chief of Neonatology at Weill Cornell Medicine since May 2022.

In this new role, Dr. Martin will develop and implement a broad departmental vision, mission, and goals for all disciplines of research. She will also create a plan for the different spokes of the research wheel to come together under the unified mission and drive research and academic output. She will work with investigators in the Department to grow the research portfolio and oversee research administration and all laboratory, translational and clinical research. Dr. Martin will lead and expand Pediatric research day and organize institutional/local research conferences, highlighting pediatric research. Furthermore, Dr. Martin will develop a departmental committee to provide an internal mechanism for reviewing grant applications and providing advice on departmental investments in research while supporting mentoring of junior research investigators.

Dr. Martin will liaise with other departments, the Drukier Institute for Children’s Health, Vice Chair for Health Services and Education Research and Vice Chair for Health Data Science. She will lead collaborative efforts with MSKCC, Columbia, Rockefeller, and Cornell University. Additionally, Dr. Martin will coordinate with BMH, LMH and NYHQ to develop an integrative approach to research so that eventually subjects for research could be recruited seamlessly at all these institutions.

Dr. Martin received her M.D. from Weill Cornell Medical College and completed her internship and residency at Lurie/Children’s Memorial Hospital-Northwestern School of Medicine where she also served as Chief Pediatric Resident. Dr. Martin completed her fellowship in Perinatal-Neonatal Medicine at the Harvard Combined Program in Neonatology. During her fellowship training, she completed a Masters in Epidemiology at Harvard School of Public Health. Dr. Martin’s research program spans basic to clinical translational research to study neonatal nutrition and its impact on health and disease in the preterm infant establishing, through these efforts, the Infant Health Research Program at BIDMC. Her research program is supported by broad based funding from the NIH, foundation, industry, philanthropy, and state-level programs. She participates in multi-site cohort studies and clinical trials serving as the Principal Investigator evaluating nutrition, growth, and long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes in the extremely preterm infant. Dr. Martin's current research focus is on lipids and fatty acid metabolism, postnatal intestinal adaptation including the microbiome, and the nutritional impact on organogenesis, development of immune defenses, and regulation of the inflammation.

We would like to extend our gratitude to Dr. Martin for her work as Division Chief of Neonatology and to welcome her to her new role as Vice Chair of Research in the Department of Pediatrics at Weill Cornell Medicine.
Lastly, we would like to express our appreciation to Dr. Katherine Hajjar for her service as Vice Chair of Basic Science Research and to Dr. Sujit Sheth for his service as Vice Chair of Clinical Research and for their dedication and contributions to pediatric research.
